UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern

The UPSC Preliminary examination consists of two objective papers conducted on the same day. Prelims is a screening stage — marks obtained here are not included in the final merit list, but candidates must qualify this stage to appear for the Mains examination.

Paper

Questions

Marks

Duration

General Studies Paper I

100

200

2 hours

CSAT (General Studies Paper II)

80

200

2 hours

Both UPSC Prelims papers have negative marking of one-third of the marks assigned to a question for every incorrect answer. In GS Paper I, each question carries 2 marks, while CSAT questions carry 2.5 marks each.

CSAT is qualifying in nature, and candidates need 33% (66 marks out of 200) to qualify. The Prelims cut-off is calculated only from GS Paper I marks among candidates who clear CSAT. Therefore, regular UPSC Prelims mock test practice is important for improving accuracy, speed, and question-solving strategy.

Exam patterns and marking schemes may change between examination cycles. Always verify the latest details from the official UPSC notification before planning your preparation.

UPSC Prelims GS Paper I Subject-Wise Practice Tests

UPSC GS Paper I covers multiple subjects. Practising subject-wise UPSC MCQ tests helps you strengthen concepts and identify weak areas before attempting full-length mock exams.

  • Indian Polity & Governance — Constitution, political system, rights issues, governance and public policy.

  • History — Ancient India, Medieval India, Modern India and the freedom movement.

  • Geography — Indian and world geography, physical geography, social geography and economic geography.

  • Economy — Economic development, poverty, inclusion, government schemes and important economic concepts.

  • Environment & Ecology — Biodiversity, climate change, conservation and environmental issues.

  • General Science & Technology — Basic science concepts and recent technological developments.

  • Current Affairs — Important national and international events relevant to UPSC.

Keep your preparation updated with regular quizzes. Practise daily and monthly current affairs and improve your awareness through general knowledge practice sets.

UPSC CSAT Mock Tests – What to Practise

The UPSC CSAT paper evaluates comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision-making skills and basic numeracy. Although CSAT is qualifying, many aspirants struggle because they do not practise consistently.

Strengthen your CSAT preparation with aptitude and reasoning practice tests and improve reading ability through English practice sets. Regular UPSC CSAT mock tests help improve speed and confidence.

UPSC Mains – A Quick Overview

After Prelims, selected candidates appear for the UPSC Mains examination, which is a descriptive stage consisting of nine papers. Two language papers are qualifying, while seven papers contribute to merit, including Essay, four General Studies papers and two Optional papers, carrying a total of 1750 marks.

The Personality Test carries 275 marks, making the final merit total 2025 marks. Since Mains requires descriptive answer writing, UPSC MCQ practice mainly helps strengthen factual knowledge and Prelims preparation. Candidates should practise answer writing separately for Mains success.
